Social Effects Of Internet Addiction

The Internet has opened up whole new worlds, offering everyone the opportunity to visit far away worlds and learn about anything they desire, all with the click of a mouse.  But, there is a downside to this ease of use and newfound technology ñ the most common being some users who have become obsessed with the Internet and all it has to offer.  This in turn leads to resulting social effects of Internet addiction, which can impact their whole lives.

What is an Internet Addiction?

To explain it in simple terms, it is an unhealthy need to use the Internet which ends up causing problems in relationships, at work, social lives as well as their physical well being.

While most of us will use the Internet sporadically for enjoyment, or to search for something we need an answer for, it generally isnít an unhealthy relationship we share with our computer.

But, for those who are addicted to the Internet, it can become all consuming and affect every aspect of their lives.  They find themselves lying about the time they are spending on the computer, and making excuses for what they are in fact doing.  They may end up spending money on online purchases, and neglect family and friends for the anonymity of cyberspace.

There can be real consequences of an addiction to the Internet, which can affect the individual in their social relationships and lives.

Spending hours online will end up severing ties with others, who will no longer have the appeal they once held for that person.  Relationships with a spouse or long-term partner can be destroyed due to the many hours spent on the computer, not to mention the deceit that can come along with the Internet use.

And, the problem doesnít only affect adults ñ there are more and more younger people who are suffering as well.  Parents need to watch for signs that their children have become addicted to the Internet.  Monitor the time that is spent online, and see what other activities are becoming affected.  Many teens will give up taking part in sports or something else that once held an interest for them.

Anyone who is suffering from this form of addiction will end up feeling isolated and alone, due to the fact that friendships and other relationships have been allowed to come to an end.  The online world will seem more real to the user, and it will be difficult to see why they should give up their enjoyment of this new reality.

There are many physical and social effects of Internet addiction, and these are a very real concern of society today.  If you believe that you or someone you know suffers from an addiction to the Internet, get help now.  Donít let the online world become your reality.
